What is a Standardized Patient (SP)?

A Standardized Patient (SP) refers to a person who has been carefully trained to portray an actual patient. They stimulate the physical findings adn psycho-social characteristics of a patient.

How are Standized Patients incorporated into the Curriculum?

• Students learn and practice skills such as physical assessment, different diagnosis, interviewing and counseling.

• SP encounters are videotaped. This provides a viable means of achieving direct observation of students while maintaining privacy for the clinician-patient interaction.

• SPs are used for various educational experiences throughout the University. They are an important resource in bridging the gap between lectures and practical applications.

• SPs can be used in many professional areas to practice, develop, and assess skill levels for professional development and competency assessment.
